Try This Bodybuilding Routine: 3 Day Split

Want a classic bodybuilder’s approach on just three days a week? This 3 day split organizes your training the old-school bodybuilding way, by body part, pairing muscles that work together so each session builds the physique with focus and a serious pump. It’s not a strength-first plan or a full-body grind. It’s about shaping muscle. Here’s how it works.

Why 3 Days Works for Bodybuilding

You don’t need a six-day bro split to build a great physique. Three focused sessions a week give each muscle enough hard volume to grow, plus generous recovery between sessions (which is when muscle actually builds). This suits busy lifters and anyone who wants real results without living in the gym. If you want a strength-and-size blend instead, my mass monster 3 day split takes that angle.

The Split: Body-Part Groupings

This split pairs muscles that naturally work together, so nothing gets over-fatigued and everything gets trained hard:

  • Day 1, Chest & Triceps: your pressing muscles, worked together.
  • Day 2, Back & Biceps: your pulling muscles.
  • Day 3, Legs & Shoulders: lower body plus delts to round out the week.

Run it on non-consecutive days (Monday, Wednesday, Friday). Notice triceps go with chest (they help you press) and biceps with back (they help you pull), so the smaller muscles are already warm. Shoulders join leg day so they get their own fresh attention.

Bodybuilding Training Principles

What makes this a bodybuilding split, not just a workout, is how you train:

  • Mind-muscle connection. Feel the target muscle working on every rep. Slow, controlled reps beat heaving weight around.
  • Moderate reps for the pump. Most of your work sits in the 8 to 15 rep range, the sweet spot for building size.
  • Compounds first, isolation second. Lead with the big lifts while fresh, then use isolation moves to finish off and shape each muscle.
  • Full range of motion. Stretch and squeeze each rep fully. Half-reps build half a physique.

Progression & Recovery

Growth still comes from progressive overload. When you hit the top of a rep range on all sets with good form, add a little weight next time. Track your lifts so you know you’re moving forward. Aim for roughly 12 to 18 hard sets per muscle group across the week.

Then recover: eat in a slight calorie surplus with plenty of protein, and sleep 7 to 9 hours. For the full nutrition and training picture, see my guide to building muscle mass. I’m not a nutritionist, so adjust the food side to your own needs.

Wrapping It Up

This 3 day bodybuilding split builds a balanced physique the classic way: chest and triceps, back and biceps, legs and shoulders, trained with focus, moderate reps, and a real mind-muscle connection. Lead with compounds, finish with isolation, progress the weight over time, and feed and rest your body. Commit for 8 to 12 weeks and track your progress. Now go move some heavy ass weight. Let’s do this.
